Photo by stevewinterphoto / The smallest bear in the world is the sun bear—and these two are a subspecies found on the island of Sumatra, in Indonesia. They were rescued from the bear bile trade. Sun bears are not only under threat from that trade but also from the illegal pet trade, poaching, and habitat loss. I had been photographing a Sumatran tiger cub caught in a poacher's snare for four days when I came across these bears at a ranger station in Banda Aceh.
