In 1497 Michelangelo, the great Italian sculptor, personally chose the stones from these mountains to make the "Pietà" artwork. After that, Carrara's white marble could be seen in many famous statues and buildings. But unfortunately through machinery and technology our impact is bigger than ever, and we have extracted more in the last 30 years than what was taken over the hundreds of years since Michelangelo's time.
