Photo by amivitale / Rangers eagerly wait for Asiwa, a Rothschild's (Nubian) giraffe that became stranded on Longicharo Island in western Kenya’s Lake Baringo, to be moved off the flooded island on a custom-built steel barge. Rising lake levels turned a peninsula into an island, trapping eight giraffes. The local community worked with conservationists from savegiraffesnow, nrt_kenya, and kenyawildlifeservice to keep them alive. Asiwa traveled more than a mile on the barge to reach a 4,400-acre fenced sanctuary. The giraffe had been isolated on a far part of Longicharo, with only about an acre available for foraging as waters continued to rise. Because her position was the most precarious, she was rescued first. The hope is that this will be the first step in reintroducing these giraffes back into their historical home, the Western Rift Valley.
