Photo by irablockphoto / For most of 2020 Cuba had few COVID-19 cases—until November, when the country opened up to tourism and the number of cases surged. Now the Cuban government is taking up the herculean task of treating its citizens with locally-produced vaccines. At the moment, there are two in phase III clinical trials, Soberana 02 and Abdala. There is also a nasal spray vaccine in the works. The government hopes to have a vaccine widely available this month. It's currently inoculating front-line workers and at-risk populations. Cuba is known for producing advanced vaccines; one for lung cancer is currently going through FDA trials in the U.S. If the Cuban COVID-19 vaccines are successful, the government plans on sharing doses with other countries.
