Photo by amivitale / Asiwa, a Rothschild's (Nubian) giraffe, is floated across western Kenya's Lake Baringo on a custom-built steel barge. She had become trapped on the lake’s Longicharo Island because of flooding. She was stuck on a marshy part of the island, separated from the other giraffes, with only about an acre of land to forage for food, and the flooding was only getting more intense. The local community worked with conservationists from savegiraffesnow, kenyawildlifeservice, and nrt_kenya to build the barge and transport the marooned animals to a 4,400-acre fenced sanctuary on the shores of the lake. With water levels rising as much as six inches per day, the rescue mission was a race against time.
