Photo by Karine Aigner kaigner/ Painted dog. Painted wolf. African wild dog. There are many names for Lycaon pictus, another of Africa’s stunning, impressive, and special species. I had the incredible opportunity to spend a couple of years photographing these animals. The African wild dog is one of Africa’s top endangered species. This apex predator suffers from habitat loss/fragmentation, domestic canine diseases, snaring, car collisions, and persecution, all of which have led to the demise of this supersocial, highly intelligent species.
Did you know that painted dogs care for their injured? Did you know that they greet each other as a family every morning and afternoon before they set out to hunt? Did you know that the puppies are cared for by another pack member that purposely stays behind to babysit? Nature is pretty perfect without us. This species remains forever in my heart of favorites.
