Photos by Michael Yamashita yamashitaphoto / The Tianzi Mountains, in Zhangjiajie, are one of four scenic spots in the Wulingyuan area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in China. The otherworldly cliffs of Wulingyuan were the real-world inspiration for the floating Hallelujah Mountains of Pandora in James Cameron's film Avatar. Five-hundred-meter-tall sandstone pillars shrouded in mist make this the Chinese classical landscape. But catching that moment is not easy, as it requires long waits for pouring rain to bring in the fog and then wind to part the clouds, revealing this quintessential scene. Zhangjiajie was China’s first designated national park, established in 1982.
