Pakistan is one of the most water-stressed countries in the world, and the Indus is vital for millions of Pakistanis who rely on it for irrigation, fishing, and to support their livestock. However, much of its water derives from glaciers in the Himalaya that are being slowly whittled away by climate change. In the short term, that means more water, but there will be a serious tipping point in the next few decades once the glaciers have shrunk to the point where they can no longer meet the needs of all who rely on the river.
