In a colony of thousands, this kiss is how the mother ensures she is feeding her own pup. This is critically important, as after giving birth the mothers suckle their pups for just 10 to 14 days. The pups are then abandoned with nothing to eat, so they must last solely on fat reserves until they’ve learnt to swim and hunt.
