Humpback moms invest a lot into their offspring. Gestation lasts nearly a year, then they spend the first year of the calf’s life teaching it all the skills it will need to survive in the sea. These bonds are strong and are an important element of whale culture. This population of humpbacks feeds in Antarctic waters during the summer then migrates to the South Pacific in winter to have their calves. Disney+ original series Secrets of the Whales, from NatGeo, is streaming this Earth Day, April 22, on DisneyPlus.
