Photo by @tamaramerino_photography / My home, a 1985 camper van, steered me into the town of Coober Pedy, where I started Underland, a series that documents communities living underground and in cave houses around the world. While crossing the Australian outback, we got a flat tire and stopped in what we thought was the middle of nowhere. We discovered, however, that we were actually in the midst of an incredible underground community. I love bizarre and unique places, so we started wandering around until we found a hill with a door and a cross on top of it. We opened the door and walked down on a red carpet and ended up inside an underground Orthodox church, with 8 or 9 candles burning, Jesus carved in the wall, and everything clean and neat. There was nobody inside, but I knew immediately I wanted to meet the people in this community and discover their stories.
