In the cockpit of a Boeing 757, they're removing some of the most valuable parts of a plane destined for scrapping. Some of these control panels, gauges, and controls have a market value of tens of thousands of dollars—the extraction and remanufacturing of industrial parts offsets both the environmental and financial cost of producing new pieces. This is an example of the "circular economy," which is surfacing as a promising solution to waste and related environmental impacts. By designing waste out of the production system, circularity aims to keep resources and materials in use.
