The giraffe had likely succumbed to old age, and before long, the usual feathered assemblage had formed around its carcass. Late to dine and quite outnumbered, the black-backed jackal found itself jostling for a spot at the feast. The process of disposal is a fierce and often grisly one, but there is beauty and balance here too.
