@joelsartore / A Lear’s macaw eyes the camera during a Photo Ark shoot
@loroparque. Named after Edward Lear, an artist who was famous for painting macaws during the mid-19th century, this is one of the most mysterious birds on Earth. For more than a hundred years, nobody knew where Lear’s macaws lived in the wild. The mystery was solved in 1978 with the bird being re-discovered in the Bahia state of northeast Brazil. At the time, only 60 birds remained, but thanks to the work of many environmental groups and government agencies, there are more than a thousand worldwide today.
