Photo by simonnorfolkstudio / Huskies photographed in the Kamchatka Peninsula, in far eastern Russia. The use of "husky" was first recorded in the mid-19th century for dogs kept by the Inuit. They are an ever changing crossbreed of fast, sled-pulling dogs. During the 1930s, Stalinist authorities targeted every vestige of non-Soviet culture, including native dog breeds. They considered sled dogs outdated creatures that should be replaced by motorized transport, but when their mechanical machines got stuck in the snow they realized the true value of these these remarkable creatures.
