Photo by lucalocatelliphoto / The world’s largest indoor vertical farm, operated by Aerofarms at its headquarters in New Jersey, aims to raise vegetables sustainably year-round in the heart of an urban area. Leafy greens are grown on a substrate made from recycled plastic bottles. Water is misted on the roots from below, using a fraction than what would be needed outdoors, while LED lights allow growth around the clock. Vertical indoor farms could be a productive way to repurpose industrial areas, and they’re surfacing as a promising solution to food security in our crowded cities.
