Video by joelsartore / The twisted beak of the white-winged crossbill might look strange, but it is perfectly designed for prying into spruce cones and extracting the seeds found within them. Crossbills are an irruptive species, which means they usually travel only short distances, but will occasionally move far outside their normal range if conditions, including food availability, in their home range are not suitable. The Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Minnesota (wrcmn), which cares for injured wildlife, has seen many cases like this in the last few months, and are caring for crossbills like this one until they are strong enough to return to the wild.
