Video by bertiegregory / Meet the second biggest fish in the world, the basking shark. These gentle giants can grow to more than 10m/30ft long. This individual was cruising around so I dived down for a closer look. She turned toward me, and I froze and let her cruise past. Historically, basking shark numbers have been hammered and in many places they were driven to local extinction. Fortunately, the population in Scotland held on, and it’s now one of the best places in the world to see them. Since commercial hunting ended in 1994, it’s hoped their numbers are increasing.
