Photo by stephenwilkes / In November 2019 I traveled to the Canadian Arctic to capture a "Day To Night" image of the polar bears in Churchill, as they began their journey across a frozen Hudson Bay. We photographed from a tundra buggy over the course of 36 hours in extreme cold conditions. Fortunately, I was able to photograph through a window, with just the front of my lens exposed. In the Day to Night series, epic landscapes are portrayed from a fixed camera angle, capturing fleeting moments of humanity and nature as light passes in front of the lens over the course of a full day. A select group of these images are blended into a single composite. This is one of the most challenging, Day to Night photographs I have created. Expeditions can sometimes last for days without seeing a polar bear, as the bears are very adept at camouflaging themselves against the snow.
