The epitome of perseverance, this owl digs its burrows in million-dollar lawns and raises its chicks to adulthood while navigating a concrete landscape of humans, trash, dogs, cats, and cars—and it even steals lace panties off clothing lines to decorate its home during mating season. This is a species that has changed its normal behavior to live among the humans who have redefined its home—and on Marco Island, a small group of humans are doing their best to protect it. Owl Watch, a community volunteer organization that monitors burrows on Marco Island, has helped create laws to protect the owls and also begun a ‘starter burrow’ project.
