Photo by kiliiiyuyan / Harriet Leavitt Reich is the widow of Qallu Reich, the former captain of an Iñupiaq subsistence whaling crew. As the wife of a captain, she has great authority over decisions affecting her crew and is considered to be within the highest social standing within her Alaskan Native community. In Iñupiaq culture, the roles of captain (umialik) and captain’s wife (imiun) are distinct and important roles, defined by different words, whereas in English the words are relational and possessive.
