Photo by beverlyjoubert / It takes a hardy traveler to crisscross these parts. For much of the year, the harshly beautiful, parched Makgadikgadi offers little in the way of hospitality—but then the oryx is a creature with very modest requirements. Evolution has shaped a true survivalist here, capable of withstanding the soaring temperatures and arid conditions of these salt-encrusted flatlands. Though they can go for days without water, they are also masters at seeking out the desert's hidden liquid. Tiny droplets of morning dew, a succulent tuber buried underground … such resourcefulness means this is all the hospitality they need.
