I have looked up to Dian Fossey since I was 12 years old, and this past week in Rwanda, I was able to tour the Ellen Campus of the Fossey Fund. It has been so emotional and so incredible to see the impact it has already had. We toured the exhibit at the campus, where we learned about Dian Fossey’s entire career, visited with young Rwandan scientists, and met with artisans using natural fibers to weave traditional Rwandan baskets sold on the campus. We learned about the important role women builders played in constructing the campus. We planted a tree that completed the reforesting of the 12-acre site, and because of all the trees and shrubs planted, birds, frogs, and other animals are coming back to the campus.
