Is there a pair more iconic than Saturn and its rings? But there was a time where the majestic gas giant existed without its statement accessory. In fact, the rings may have been formed much later than the planet itself according to analysis of gravity science data from NASASolarSystem’s Cassini spacecraft. The findings indicate that Saturn's rings formed between 10 million and 100 million years ago, which from our planet’s perspective would mean that Saturn’s rings formed during the age of the dinosaurs. Measurements collected from the final, ultra-close orbits of Cassini performed in 2017 helped reach these conclusions. Alt text: Saturn’s profile dominates the long-form image. The portion of the planet that is visible appears smooth with light stripes of a mellow gold hue. From the center of the planet, Saturn’s many rings expand, and appear smooth in texture in a dark tan shade. Some of the shadows from the ring are visible and cast a black shadow on the planet.
