That Tracks ✅ Perseverance is breaking Martian records; capable of covering more than 300 yards (274 meters) a day – more than any other rover on Mars, thanks to the rover's self-driving capabilities. The rover uses an auto-navigation system to make 3D maps of the terrain, find hazards, and plan routes passed obstacles. This image, captured on the 381st sol (Martian day) of Perseverance's mission, shows the rover looking back at its wheel tracks in Jezero Crater, believed to be an ancient now-dry lake. A key part of Perseverance's mission is astrobiology, including searching for signs of long-ago microbial life. The rover is the first to cache samples of Martian dust and rock. Studying terrain, geology, and past climate helps forge our understanding of Mars and will guide future human exploration of the Red Planet.
