No moon “crater” than Ganymede 🌕
No, really – it’s the largest moon in our solar system! It is even larger than the planet Mercury. While it is only one of 53 of Jupiter’s named moons, it is the only moon that has its own internally generated magnetic field.
The complex surface of Jupiter’s moon Ganymede is captured here from our Juno mission’s close pass of the giant moon in June 2021. At closest approach, the spacecraft came just within just 650 miles (1,046 kilometers) of Ganymede’s surface.
This image taken by the JunoCam shows one of the dark-rayed craters, named Kittu. Most of Ganymede’s craters have bright rays extending from the impact scar, but only 1% of the craters have dark rays. Kittu is about 9 miles (14.5 km) across, and is surrounded by darker material ejected during the impact that formed the crater.
Citizen scientist Thomas Thomopoulos created this enhanced-color image using data from the camera. The original image was taken on June 7, 2021.
