Astronomy's Antihero 🦸 Black holes get a bad rap. They’re seen as hungry monsters that gobble up planets and stars, but recent evidence captured by the NASAHubble shows otherwise. In the heart of a dwarf galaxy, a black hole is creating stars - contributing to a firestorm of new star formation taking place in the galaxy. This is the opposite effect of what’s seen in larger galaxies, where material falling toward the black hole is whisked away by surrounding magnetic fields, forming blazing jets of plasma moving close to the speed of light. Gas clouds caught in the path of these jets are heated beyond their ability to cool down and form stars. But with a less-massive black hole like the one in this dwarf galaxy, its gentler outflow compresses gas just enough to create a new star formation.
