If Curiosity sees its shadow, are there six more weeks of Martian winter? 🧐
Mars, like Earth, has four distinct seasons, though they vary in length because of its elliptical orbit around the Sun. In the Northern Hemisphere, spring is the longest season on Mars, lasting 194 sols (or Martian days), autumn is 142 sols long, winter is 154 sols, and summer 178 sols.
In this photo, our Curiosity Mars rover is taking a selfie using the Mars Hand Lens Imager, or MAHLI, at the end of its robotic arm. The photo is comprised of 81 images stitched together. They were taken on Nov. 20, 2021 – the 3,303rd sol of the mission – when Curiosity was heading toward Maria Gordon Notch. This U-shaped opening behind the rover to the left was named after the Scottish scientist who was an expert in geology, paleontology, and zoology in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
