Here we have some happy little clouds and a happy little volcano. 🌥🌋 Italy's Mount Vesuvius breaks through the clouds, as captured by Earth-observing satellite Landsat 8. The the only active volcano on mainland Europe, Vesuvius and was regarded by the ancient Romans as being sacred to the demigod Hercules, son of Jupiter. Because of its proximity to heavily-populated Naples, Vesuvius is closely monitored by a volcanological observatory, which happens to be the world’s first. By dating lava samples, scientists have been able to determine that the volcano has had eight major eruptions, the most recent occurring in 1944.
