There is magic in the night đź”®
Above the Indian Ocean in between Australia and Antarctica, approximately 273 miles (440 kilometers) above Earth, astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) captured this vivid green light show over the southern hemisphere of the planet.
Named for the Roman goddess of dawn, an aurora is a captivating display of light in the night sky caused by atoms colliding to create brilliant bursts of light. When we see a glowing aurora like the one pictured, we are watching a billion individual collisions, lighting up the magnetic field lines of Earth along the northern and southern hemispheres - aurora borealis also known as the “northern lights” and aurora australis also known as the “southern lights.”
