❤️ We love Lucy.
Our
#LucyMission, that is. Targeted to launch on Oct. 16 at 5:34 a.m. EDT (09:34 UTC) our Lucy spacecraft will lift off to the sky -- with diamonds -- aboard a ULALaunch Atlas V rocket. Seen here is its ride to space as it is rolled out to the launch pad at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
Lucy will be the first spacecraft to study Jupiter's Trojan asteroids, two clusters of ancient space rocks that are leftovers of planetary formation. Like the mission's namesake – the fossilized human ancestor, "Lucy," whose skeleton provided unique insight into humanity's evolution – Lucy will revolutionize our knowledge of planetary origins and the formation of the solar system. On board are a suite of instruments that will study these worlds, including a diamond beamsplitter that splits beams of light so scientists can determine the temperatures and surface properties of an asteroid.
