Galaxy M61's luminous heart shines
In this image, the galaxy's winding spiral arms are studded with ruby-red patches of light — signs of recent star formation.
M61 lies more than 52 million light-years from Earth. The heart of the galaxy hosts a supermassive black hole, more than five million times as massive as the Sun.
This image incorporates data from not only NASAHubble, but also the FOcal Reducer and Spectrograph 2 camera at the ESOAstronomy’s Very Large Telescope, together revealing M61 in unprecedented detail. It's one of many examples of telescope teamwork! Astronomers frequently combine data from ground-based and space-based telescopes to learn more about the universe.
