With the recent passage of the American Rescue Plan in DC, Chicago is receiving $1.8 billion and Illinois is receiving $7.5 billion in relief funds, our government is making decisions now about how those dollars will be spent, and a portion must go to the arts. These funds are essential for the creative sector: to pay rent, retain employees, and support COVID business adaptations. Given the nearly complete shutdown of arts and culture for the last year, we need direct government support. The dollars are there, we must act now. We are encouraging the mayor to dedicate $25 million of Chicago's federal relief dollars to support our devastated arts and cultural sector.
