Press freedom day is celebrated a day after my birthday which is on May 2, so a free press is the present that I would like to receive as long as I live.
Press freedom for me means no pressure from the editors and bosses of media outlets on the reporters regarding modifying the reality they document on the field.
It means protection from the authorities when journalists are threatened after uncovering corruption and lies.
It means financial and moral support for journalists in order to work on an investigation or report as much as needed.
On this day my thoughts go to the Ukrainian and Russian journalists who risk their lives for telling the truth, to all the journalists from all the countries where this is one of the most dangerous professions, to my Romanian colleagues who keep doing great work despite small salaries and threats.
Sincerely,
Delia Marinescu, Romania marinescu.delia freelance journalist
