The Katha Upanishad is an early Indian text and one of the first that calls its teachings ‘yoga.’ Many concepts are presented that were incorporated by later authors who developed Yoga practice, including the authors of the Yoga Sutra and Bhagavad Gita. The text tells the story of the precocious boy Nachiketa who has the privilege of asking Yama, the Hindu god of death, questions on the meaning of life. In response, Yama, teaches Nachiketa an early form of Vedanta and encourages him to seek his own deepest self.
