The book’s title, “The Stainless Steel Carrot,” isn’t actually about the Datsun 510. Instead, it’s a reference to the elusive Formula A car that John Morton and other team members were promised would arrive once they’d achieved success with the Datsun sports cars. That kept them from growing impatient while BRE team owner Pete Brock worked to secure funding for the new series.

Finally, the Formula A car arrived: a Lotus 70B to compete in the 1972 Formula F5000 series. Morton was fast from the beginning. But success would always appear to be just out of reach. It would prove to be the plucky Datsuns, after all, that became his legacy.
