A virunganationalpark update from global_wildlife_conservation: Virunga, Africa’s oldest National Park builds peace through conservation in a war-torn region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo 🇨🇩 (DRC). As the continent’s most biologically diverse protected area, it is home to more than 🌿 2,000 plant species, 🐦 706 bird species, and 🦍 218 mammal species. It is one of 16,000 Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs), as it is of global importance to the planet’s overall health and the persistence of biodiversity.⁠ ⁠ The past year has been an especially challenging year for Virunga’s wildlife, wildlands, and their guardians. The COVID-19 crisis has resulted in a deficit in funding for protected areas around the world, due to a halt in ecotourism.
