A virunganationalpark update from global_wildlife_conservation: Virunga, Africa’s oldest National Park builds peace through conservation in a war-torn region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo 🇨🇩 (DRC). As the continent’s most biologically diverse protected area, it is home to more than 🌿 2,000 plant species, 🐦 706 bird species, and 🦍 218 mammal species. It is one of 16,000 Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs), as it is of global importance to the planet’s overall health and the persistence of biodiversity.
The past year has been an especially challenging year for Virunga’s wildlife, wildlands, and their guardians. The COVID-19 crisis has resulted in a deficit in funding for protected areas around the world, due to a halt in ecotourism. And 6 Vriunga rangers lost their lives in an attack in January.
