#Regram #RG greenmatters:
Norway has taken a big step to help Gabon, a small nation in Central Africa, fight back against deforestation: Over the next 10 years, the country will spend $150 million to make sure the rainforest — which makes up much of Gabon — doesn’t need to succumb to economical pressures to either sell timber or clear the forest for development.
Instead, Norway will spend $10 for every ton of carbon captured by the rainforest; though it’s likely less profitable than deforestation would be for the country, it helps protect the land that Gabon values. Norway has introduced similar programs of “performance-based forest payments” in countries like Indonesia and Brazil, but Gabon is unique in that the program can help save forests that are still standing — rather than just slowing down the process of deforestation.
