Why do we call it the Tony Awards? With the countdown to Broadway’s biggest night, I headed over to the museumofbroadway to see a larger than life Tony Award and more than a dozen real ones that are one display.
The Tonys is just the nickname, but its full name is The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre.
Antoinette Perry was an actress, director, producer and co-founder of the American Theatre Wing. After her death, friends wanted to honor her contributions to theater and created an award celebrating excellence in theater...and that’s the Tonys.
The first one happened in 1947 at the Waldorf Astoria. The first two years winners didn’t get an award like this. They received a piece of paper and either a gold money clip or compact.
