Climate change has melted 40 of the glacial mass of Ecuador's volcanoes and reduced the highland paramo grasslands' ability to retain water, and act as a living reservoir for the Kichwa communities living in the mountains, and give birth to the greatest water system on the planet, the Amazon basin. In the Peruvian Andes, where there are more pronounced wet and dry seasons, water has become scarce in highlands where water was never in short supply, leading to conflict between thirsty cities and farmers versus indigenous rural communities.
