The first business book I ever read was
#straightfromthegut when I was 17/18. It’s the reason I went to work at GE.
I remember transferring to UMass Amherst before my Sophomore year in college. During orientation on my first day, I met the Dean for the first time, and I told him we should invite Jack back to give a talk to the Isenberg School. He laughed at me because Jack hadn’t been back in maybe over a decade, plus who says that the first time they meet the dean?!
I made it my mission the next 3 years to bring him back. On Christmas Eve 2014 I got a call from the Deans’ office saying Jack received my latest letter (there were many!) and agreed to come back as part of his Winning book tour.
When Jack came back in the Spring of 2005 I was lucky enough to be one of two moderators. He was incredibly kind, encouraging, and inspiring. Meeting him was a dream come true and when I graduated a few months later I went to work at GE, in the same business where he grew up, GE Plastics...
