On this day 955 years ago, this field was the backdrop to one of the most pivotal events in English history. At the foot of the field stood William of Normandy on the eve of conquest. At the top stood Harold Godwineson, the defender of Anglo Saxon England. When the day was done, and the battle was lost and won, England was entering a new era - an era that would change the country forever. William of Normandy became ‘the Conqueror’ while Harold’s death and defeat ended Anglo Saxon culture. From language to architecture, finance to politics, the Norman Conquest had an everlasting impact on England. And it can be traced back to the Battle of Hastings, on this day in 1066. On the site of the battlefield now stands Battle Abbey which was built by William in penance.
