Lost the game, won our hearts. The Burgundy Lion Pub in Montréal dressed itself red and white for Canada’s first World Cup match in 36 years. Kids skipped school, adults teleworked from the bar, and others simply called out sick. Almost an hour out from kick off, the three floors of this legendary soccer establishment were already packed to the brim with expectant fans. It was a once-in-a-lifetime occasion impossible to miss. From the opening whistle, Canada made the 2nd ranked team in the world look 2nd rate. Shot after shot, dribble after dribble, and tackle after tackle, the fervent supporters at Burgundy Lion leapt from their seats and roared in approval. The penalty miss by Phonzie and the goal by Belgium were gut-wrenching, but the fans never wavered. They’d waited their entire lives, and the result wasn’t going to sour the experience.
