Jane Bolin was a groundbreaking trailblazer becoming the first Black woman to graduate from Yale Law School, join the New York City Bar Association, and be appointed as a judge! Her passion for social justice stemmed from being the daughter of an influential lawyer. She would face overt racism and social isolation while in law school however she graduated as one of the top students of her class! She would then go into private practice before making national headlines for being appointed as a family court judge in 1939 by then New York Mayor Fiorello La Guardia making her the first Black female judge in the country! Although she was tremendously proud of this accomplishment, Bolin did not wear judicial robes in court as she wanted to make children feel more at ease during a difficult time.
