On a hot summer night in 1937, a revolutionary idea was born! While driving, Frederick McKinley Jones thought, what if he could invent a portable cooling system to allow trucks to better transport perishable food???
Jones was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1893 and although he was orphaned at 8 years old and spent most of his life living on his own, he did not let that stop his ingenuity! His passion for tinkering with machines and mechanical devices grew over time and as he got older, he got even better at fixing them. While working as an automobile mechanic he rose to become foreman of the shop!
He would also go on to serve in the U.S Army in WWI, where he made repairs to machines and other equipment. His notable inventions came shortly after returning from the war. He founded the U.S. Thermo Control Company, which grew during WWII, helping preserve blood, medicine, and food! CNN
