🌟 Unsung Hero, Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm 🌟
Did you know Shirley Chisholm was the first African American woman in congress? Additionally, she was the first woman and African American to seek nomination as the President of the United States!
Chisholm ran for the New York State Legislature in 1964 and she later fought for and won a seat in Congress in 1968. During her time in Congress, she introduced more than 50 pieces of legislation and worked towards racial and gender equality, the plight of the poor, and ending the Vietnam War.
When she decided to run for the Democratic party presidential nomination in 1972 she was met with discrimination. She had been blocked from doing television primary debates, but with proper legal action, she was permitted with one speech.
Chisholm retired from Congress in 1983. She then taught at Mount Holyoke College and co-founded the National Political Congress of Black Women.
