Mayor H. Roe Bartle (1956-1963) was mayor of Kansas City during one of its most transformative times. A profile in Time Magazine described him as the “most imposing feature on the Kansas City landscape….outsized only by his own voice.” He was the city's mayor during the height of #urbanrenewal, #suburbanization, #civilrightsmovement and convinced the Hunts to bring the chiefs to Kansas City. (Their first game was just east of the current day Jazz district at Municipal Stadium). Promotion > politics was his schtick. He smoke 25 cigars a day but lived well in to his 70s. Very interesting man! Next time you're at Bartle Hall check out this #exhibit. #kchistory #mayorbartle #chiefs #kcmo #
