WHO IS APIDA? . APIDA stands for Asian Pacific Islander Desi American. It encompasses Asian peoples from East Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia. It also includes Pacific Islanders from Polynesia, Micronesia, and Melanesia. . APIDA Heritage Month (or Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month) began as “Pacific/Asian American Heritage Week” after it was introduced to Congress in 1977. It was eventually passed into legislation by President Jimmy Carter on October 5, 1978. Congress officially designated May as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month in 1992 to honor the community’s rich heritage and contributions that have been very influential in the United States’ history. .
