One of the best pieces of advice I received from my teacher was this: Steal.
Piggy-backing off of our most recent post about design theft, some people believe in stealing other's work. They see it as a form of inspiration, a form of flattery, and an inevitability. In the art world, there's a style called Appropriation, which, in the design world, would be impossible to get away with. The idea isn't to copy + paste. The idea is to take another's idea, and add your own creativity to it.
@austinkleon captures the idea of stealing perfectly in his book, Steal Like An Artist: "In the end, merely imitating your heroes is not flattering to them. Transforming their work into something of your own is how you flatter them."
Do you have this book? Do you believe in this? If you are a teacher, would you teach this to your students? Leave your thoughts below 👇
