Today is Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons Awareness Day. Murder rates of Native American womxn are up to 10x higher than the national average for all races. Cases are often under-reported and data isn’t officially collected. Thanks to the work of athletes like Jordan Marie (NativeIn_LA) and Rosalie Fish (RosalieFishx) who’s runs have raised awareness of this crisis—running with a painted red hand on their face and MMIW on their arm or leg—these two are advocating for justice for these lost voices, making sure they’re never forgotten, and fighting to put a stop to it. In April, Secretary Haaland created a new Missing & Murdered Unit to pursue justice for missing or murdered Native Americans and Alaska Natives, that will now have 6xs the budget of a similar task force the Justice Department (DOJ) established in 2019.
